The KIT offers a unique environment for studies due to the close link between teaching and large-scale research. On the basis of this combination, the research group on research into teaching investigates how lecturers accept and manage research-oriented teaching at the KIT.
The lecturers at KIT’s Campus South were interviewed to find answers to the following questions:
- How is research-oriented teaching at KIT being conceptualized?
- What do the lecturers at KIT think of the use of research-oriented elements?
- What constitutes good teaching?
- Which factors are essential to improvements in teaching quality?
- What are the lecturers’ information needs regarding research-oriented teaching?
From January 2013 to March 2013, an online survey on research-oriented elements in teaching was carried out among the lecturers.
Together with the Quality Management Division of the Executive Support Department, a questionnaire was developed and made accessible to all lecturers via a link. All Campus South lecturers were invited via email plus reminder email to take part in the survey.
Although, out of 2,500 to 3,000 questionnaires, no more than 265 were returned and, thus, the result obtained was not representative, the eleven departments with their core areas engineering and economic sciences, natural sciences and informatics, arts and social sciences were covered.
