General information about the institute

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is a higher education and research organisation with about 8,900 employees, 21,000 students, and a total annual budget of about 750 million Euros. KIT was established on 01/10/2009 as merger of Universität Karlsruhe (founded in 1825), one of Germany’s leading research universities, and Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (founded in 1956), member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres.

The Institute of Vocational Education and Training (IBP) research comprises a wide array from competence development, organisational learning and innovation in (international) vocational education and training to technical didactics and a high competence on instructional design of media. The institutional work comprises also academic teaching for students becoming vocational school teachers and for students in pedagogics with emphasis on vocational education training (B.A. and M.A. level).

Part of the institute is the research group „Engineering Didactics“ which focuses mainly on engineering didactics, media use as well as learning and teaching assistance in vocational training, higher education and andragogy. They research group was involved in the Leonardo Da Vinci funded project “EuroPolytec” as well as in part-projects of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) and Ministry of Science and Baden-Württemberg (MWK) funded project “KIC InnoEnergy”.

The research undertaken at IBP is positioned at the cross roads of work, labor markets, technology, and its impact on vocational education and training as well as human resource development. The shaping of technology is in the focus of the research Study programs in General Education, Vocational Education and Training as well as Engineering Pedagogy and Human Resource Development are offered at IBP/KIT.

The accompanying research of the model-project initiative focusing on quality development and quality assurance (ProQuali), was concerned with the evaluation of 10 national projects, promoted by the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training (BIBB), funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) was co-ordinated by the KIT's Institute for Vocational and General Education in collaboration with the fbb.

Part of the IBP’s department of Vocational Educaton and Training is the research project MediaArt@Edu which undertakes research in the field of integrated art, design, portfolio mentoring, and technology education in vocational preparation. The project is based on the exploration of digital media such as smart textile, robotics, virtual worlds, mobile media and didactic interfaces. A shaping-oriented media education approach is explored through constructivist and constructionist pedagogy linked to creative processes of young people. It is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research and Education (BMBF) under the program of improving digital media skills in vocational qualification.

Part of Institute is the research project "Lehre hoch Forschung” (overall project: ‘Qualitätspakt Lehre’ to increase the quality of teaching in higher education) which is realised in co-operation with the House of Competence (KIT). The project “Lehre hoch Forschung” focuses on a sustainable improvement of teaching and study conditions at the KIT. In due consideration of professional specification, scientific and research-oriented education allows for the development of professional, methodological, social and personal skills and thus supports the development of vocational decision making and responsibility at an early stage.

IBP’s scientific staff includes engineers, vocational education experts, teachers, social scientists, media and engineering educators and researchers in the humanities who work together in interdisciplinary teams.
